Welcome to the Cultural City of Bergen!
- Norway's second largest city (population 235.000) and the Gateway to the Fjords. Bergen is centrally located by the North Sea. Ever since its foundation in 1070 by king Olav Kyrre, Bergen has attracted people from all quarters of the world.
Today Bergen is a melting pot of arts and culture, activities at sea, oil and gas and academic endeavours.
Bergen has one of the world's oldest symphony orchestras, the country's first national theatre, a whole range of museums and institutions, and is the host of Bergen International Festival. Bergen was the birthplace of the famous composer Edvard Grieg.
The city is also known for its vibrant contemporary cultural scene. No surprise that Bergen became European City of Culture in the year 2000, when Bergen International Film Festival was arranged for the first time.
Bergen is also the headquarter of Norwegian TV2. Cinema attendance at Bergen Kino is about 1,1 mill. per year.
