BIFF and Studentersamfunnet will be hosting debates at Tivoli, Det Akademiske Kvarter during the festival

ØSTERSJØEN (on the Baltic Sea region)

Thursday 21. October, 18:00, Tivoli, Det Akademiske Kvarter

This region is a rare topic in Norwegian public debates, but we still have significant interests in the area. Norway is head of the Council of Baltic Sea States this year, but in the last 18 years the Council has existed we have heard little about the cooperation between the elleven member countries. Are Norwegian interests in the North in conflict with our interests in the Baltic Sea region, and are there conflicts between our relationship with Russia in different regions?

FEM FILMER – ÉN HISTORIE (Five films - one story)

Friday 22. October, 14:00 - 21:30, Tivoli, Det Akademiske Kvarter (entrance 100 kr for the whole seminar)

Today we offer a documentary film seminar where five documentaries, when seen in relation to each other, presents an original story about Norway in the world, and the national regime of "goodness". The story shows a field of politics which is peculiar because it has been spared regular criticism, where critical questions are deemes immoral. The filmmakers have made their films in a way which creates a distance towards foreign aids moral power, and to undermine the legitimacy of moralizing.

There will be screenings of DE NORSKE LEIEDIPLOMATENE, DE NORSKE STATSMISJONÆRENE, DE HVITE HJELPERNE, and SULTBLØFFEN. Terje Tvedt, Søren Birkvad and Helle Sjøvåg will present aspects of the Norwegian self-image, the documentary and journalisms role in a critical and enlightened debate.

 

DEMOKRATISK DELTAGELSE (Democratic participation)

Saturday 23. October, 18:00, Tivoli, Det Akademiske Kvarter

Bogotá, beginning of the 1990s: a city characterized by corruption, poverty and crime. The citizens have lost faith in politicians. The documentary BOGOTÁ CHANGE presents two charismatic mayors who by their unorthodox politics have given the Colombian capital a fresh start. How did Antanas Mockus and Enrique Peñalosa change Bogotá to an organized city with culture and democracy? Which new ideas and strategies are behind the city that rose up from the ashes?

NORGE I KRIG (Norway at war)

Sunday 24. October, 18:00, Tivoli, Det Akademiske Kvarter

Netherlands finished their military mission in Afghanistan this fall. Here the latest polls show that a majority is against Norway´s military presence in the country. Do we have a responsibility to contribute to the future development of Afghanistan?

SPIN & SWING

The documentary CASINO JACK AND THE UNITED STATES OF MONEY shows how wrong things can turn out when the public doesn´t get to know what happens behind the politicians´ closed doors. The debate on lobbyism is also important in Norway, with a growing PR industry and several ex-politicians bringing their experience into the business. Lobbying has come to stay, but can it be controlled?

MENNESKET BAK FLYKTNINGEN (The person in the refugee)

Tuesday 26. October 18:00, Tivoli, Det Akademiske Kvarter

Johannes Naber´s Germany in the film THE ALBANIAN is a mercyless place. A world without room for illegal immigrants, where integrity and moral have no place. What happens to those who are refused to stay in Norway? What responsibility does the Norwegian society have for the refugees who are marked illegal? In connection with International Week 2010 Amnesty International Norway, Norsk People´s Aid, Redd Barna, and Studentersamfunnet i Bergen invite a discussion on this topic.

Director Johannes Naber will be present at the screening to answer questions. There will also be stands and human library arranged by International Week.

CYBERPHOBIA

We are faced with a technological development that will test both our imaginations and our ethics. Which ethical problems are we faced with when robots become more intelligent and nano- and biological science merges into something that was pure science fiction a few years back. Where are we headed, and what are the consequences of this development?
